What is a mental disorder?
A mental disorder is often indicated when an individual experiences notable changes in their thinking, emotions, or behavior. These changes often cause the person to experience significant emotional distress. They can also cause impaired functioning in important areas of life, such as family relationships, work, or school.
When should a person seek help for a mental disorder?
Almost everyone has experienced a time in their life when they were unable to manage their anxious thoughts, depressed mood, or unwanted behavior without support from another person - whether that person was a spouse, parent, or friend. However, there are times when an individual, couple, or family is suffering to the extent that they need the help of a trained mental health professional.
If you or your family member is experiencing changes in thinking, emotions, or behavior which are causing significant emotional distress or impaired functioning in an important area of life, you may be greatly benefited by seeking the help of a skilled professional. At Sycamore Counseling Associates, we would perform a thorough mental health assessment which would enable us to render an accurate diagnosis and to present treatment options which we believe would be helpful to you. We would then assist you in developing a personalized treatment plan, and help you begin working toward the goals of that plan.
